7. What is the unmet need for IBs in oncology?
Good biomarkers not yet available for all the “Hallmarks of Cancer”.
Some good imaging biomarkers (IBs) exist with good-to-excellent technical validation / qualification for certain tumor characteristics such as tumor mass, Warburg effect and tumor perfusion/permeability.
There is a high unmet need for well-qualified IBsto assess interventions which promote tumor cell death/apoptosis or prevent tumor cell proliferation.
IBs need to be:
- technically validated for international multicentre trials in cancer centers;
- suitable for typical Phase 1 oncology trials;
- interpretable (especially “no change in biomarker” = “ineffective drug”).
